Malo Soifua Aiga,
Yet another week in The SAM ( that's what all the missionaries call it here). Pretty good week. Elder Mo'o has been sick so it was a little bit of a lazier one, but it's all good. Not to much of an update this week, but here I go:
-We went to the funeral on Aso Faraile, it was a nice service, and I was happy to show my support.
You'll love this... they are LDS so it was held in a church building. During the funeral a song started playing on the piano. Elder Mo'o and I looked at each other and almost started busting up. It was "Faithfully" by Journey...Only in Samoa.
-My Sunday school teacher really likes me and always tries to teach me samoan words. This week, in church he was teaching me the swear words...So yeah a little cussing in church. Haha it's just a different world over here :)
-Still DL. there are 8 in my district.
-People think I only eat "American" food A.k.a Fried Chicken and rice...So that's been fun
Pololo- nummy
-oh also random and kinda funny, during WWII the Germans tried to take over Samoa, but couldn't. However, there were some Germans who stayed. So there are in fact some "Hunter's" on the Island of Upolu…I may be part Samoan after all haha!
--Little to no support from the ward which is difficult. Religion is different here. If you get married into a family, you have to convert or the village will fine you 1000 Tala of a new cow. So our baptism was a girl who had to convert. However, we taught her all of the lessons, and feel that she had an actual belief in what she was doing.
Difficult work because in one village we cover, Samata-uta, it is Fa'aSa ( forbidden) for us to go into people's houses. The Faifeau (Pastors) of different villages can make rules like this and the people will listen, so in one of our three areas nothing gets done.
For such a religious country...there is no freedom of religion
-The fam I'm staying with totally has a uke, so I've learned like 5 new songs. It makes me happy. Please send the lyrics/ uke chords to the song "Seeking What's Good" It's a church song I want to learn and possibly play. Thanks :)
On the Spiritual Side:
We had a district meeting and an Elder Afuvai (from my intake) taught the lesson. He was teaching on Christ-like attributes and it was a very powerful lesson to me.
He was saying how it is the only chapter in Preach My Gospel that truly talks about changing your actions to become more like Christ.
He also talked about how the mission isn't easy. Christ's ministry on earth wasn't easy, and He's the Only Begotten of the Father. Why should it be easy for us?
A mission is very difficult, however it is barely a sliver of the pain and trials He went through. He said though, that becoming more Christ-like makes it easier.
Less talking and more action.
All is going well here. The Gospel is true. I love you all so much and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Alofa Atu,
Elder Hunter S.G.
Seeking What is Good Lyrics
By: Ejay Mulitalo who is 16 years old.
The sunshine comes even when it rains,
And even through darkness the morning comes again
I guess what I’m saying is that theres always something good that you can find
And to see it if you open up your mind
The bad will come and go,
But through is all theres constant light for us to follow
(chorus)
I’ve been open up my eyes to see all the beauty thats all around me
Day after day and no matter what they say
I’ll follow what I’ve been taught and come what may
I’ll be true I’ll be strong and my heart will be pure,
Others may wonder but I’ll endure cause
I’m doing the things I should, and seeking whats good
And even when trials come into my life
Faith lets my doubting soul take flight
(chorus)
I’ve been open up my eyes to see all the beauty thats all around me
Day after day and no matter what they say
I’ll follow what I’ve been taught and come what may
I’ll be true I’ll be strong and my heart will be pure,
Others may wonder but I’ll endure cause
I’m doing the things I should, and seeking whats good
Seeking whats good
Seeking whats good
Seeking whats good
